Each organ and tissue donor saves or improves the lives of as many as 50 people. Giving the "Gift of Life" may lighten the grief of the donor's own family. As Billy awaits a cadaveric (non-living) lung transplant, his illness is progressing and his health is deteriorating. Living Lung Donation is Billy's best hope to save his life. This procedure would require two donors to donate one of their five lobes to Billy. The remaining lobes would fill their chest cavity over time and would operate as a full set of lungs with minimal impact to the donors. Billy would use the donated lobes as his lungs, and this would allow him to have close to normal lung performance. The screening process for potential donors is completely confidential.You will remain anonymous so that if you cannot complete the process due to a personal or medical reason, there are no feelings of guilt, anxiety, etc.
A tax-deductible fund had been established to assist us in the search for organ donors and to assist with transplant-related costs. Expenses incurred by Billy's and the donor's families will include transportation costs, medical co-payments, overnight stays, etc. Additionally, donors will need to be compensated for lost wages during recovery.
